This year has felt like it has been going on for several lifetimes with no end in sight. We have been inundated with so much nonsense, disruption and cruelty that it is difficult to know if one is coming or going most days. It would be all to easy to give into the bleakness of these times. It also would be too easy just to over load one’s self with every single event that is happening to the point where you want to completely withdraw and tune out or run one’s self into the ground. At this moment and time neither are the best option.
We need to remember that rest is paramount. In these times rest is an act of resistance. Taking the time to breathe and regroup does the opposite of what the opposition expects us to do. The opposition expects us to get bent out of shape, frustrated and unable to think, strategize and organize. Rest keeps us focused. Rest allows us to think outside the box. Rest also allows others to carry the load. After the last election the 92% (the voting block of black women who have influenced elections) understood that it was time to rest. Black women have carried so many social movements and issues in this country fighting for the rights of all while getting no acknowledgment, support and continuously being treated as an after thought and undeserving. Rest at this moment for the 92% is needed and well deserved. Yet, that does not mean black women are tuning out. The lift at this moment is on all of us and rest will be part of the plan. This journey will be difficult and maybe even long, so let’s not burn out before the real work begins. Just know the opposition is not expecting a rested opponent. So, take a deep breath and get comfortable because the fight has just begun.
